Valentines Day is coming up and it's one of those holidays that you love or hate. And I get it, it seems like as with every holiday, it's become completely over-commercialized. But even with the over commercialization, you can still celebrate Valentines Day as just another day to show love to your family and friends. I personally love it, and use it as another way to do something special for the people I love. The way I think about it is, Valentines Day is going to happen whether you like it or not, why not have fun with it? My husband and I usually make a special dinner or exchange cards, but we also do some things for our two daughters to make them feel loved as well. This is also another way to make lasting memories with your kids. These can become traditions in your family that your kids will grow up with and pass on to their kids.
My mom started a scavenger hunt on Valentines Day when my siblings and I were kids and every year we looked forward to it. It's a tradition that I'm passing down to my kids. Here are five ideas to celebrate Valentine's Day with your kids.
Make a Special Breakfast
One simple way to make Valentines Day special for your kids is to make a special breakfast. It could be as simple as picking up donuts or making heart-shaped pancakes if you're feeling more ambitious the morning-of. Even baking a can of cinnamon rolls and adding red dye to the icing can be a fun way to add some Valentines Day cheer to your kids' day!
Scavenger Hunt
This is the tradition that my mom started when I was a kid. A scavenger hunt that ended with a treasure at the end! And it wasn't an ordinary scavenger hunt... No no no. It was a treasure hunt sent by the "Valentine's Day Pirate" complete with a treasure map that has burned edges and an "X marks the spot, clues written in Pirate language (Arrrrgh lassies, ye've gotten so smart this year, but are ye smart enough to find me treasure?), and a bucket full of goodies at the end. I've started this tradition with my daughters and they love it. They ask every year when the pirate is coming. And what kid doesn't like a treasure hunt?
Don't like a Pirate-themed scavenger hunt? You could make it your own and do a plain Valentines Day scavenger hunt! It's the same concept that will still be fun for your kids.
Make a Valentine's Day Treat
Heart-shaped cookies, a cake, rice crispy treats? Make it as simple or complicated as you want and make a special Valentine's Day themed treat. Your kids will love baking with you! My two daughters are always so happy to help bake something yummy.
Make Homemade Valentine's Day Crafts
When you were a kid, did you ever make paper chain link garland? It's SO easy and a quick way to decorate your house for Valentine's Day. All you need is construction paper, scissors, and a stapler. Cut even strips of paper, and staple them together into a chain link. It's simple and a cute decoration to hang around your house.
Some other ideas are homemade Valentine's Cards or paper hearts.
Have a Movie Night
Your kids will love having a movie night on Valentine's Day. It can be Valentine's themed or not, they will love hanging out with you. Grab some popcorn and candy and that's enough to make it a special experience that your kids will remember.
However you choose to celebrate Valentine's Day with your kids, the most important thing is to enjoy it! If that means cutting out some paper hearts and taping up on the walls - that's perfect. Your kids will love spending time with you. And that's all it comes down to - Time with parents. All of these ways to celebrate are just ways to spend time with your kids, and there's nothing kids want more, and it's a perfect way to show love for your kids on a day celebrating LOVE!
